Domestic Abuse and Partnership Working

three victims left the perpetrator immediately after the incident

Partnership working has proved time and time again to be immensely beneficial if not essential in the prevention and handling of domestic abuse cases. This morning, I read an article written by Jasmin McDermott at the Police Oracle on a four week pilot organised by Aurora New Dawn. In a nutshell, the project allowed volunteers to accompany police officers called out to domestic abuse incidents and provide further support to the victim while a statement was being taken.

The statistic from Jasmin’s article that really stood out to me was that three victims left the perpetrator immediately after the incident when a volunteer accompanied the officer. It seems as though the extra support that a partnership like this was able to provide made all the difference to the experience of the victim.

With headlines hitting the news every day about a higher number of domestic abuse incidents being reported, more and more police forces will be searching for ways to join up their services with others and offer the best support they possibly can, together.
